Description
The Shani is a small candlestick, 17cm tall, cast in a sand mould and finished in antique brass. It stands on a wide conical foot with an uneven, wavy flange at the rim, narrows to a pinched neck, opens again into a faceted lozenge at the middle, then narrows once more into a plain cup. The surface is pitted and rough all over and the lip of the cup runs wavy rather than true.
The cup takes a dinner candle and holds it 17cm above the surface, which on a dining table puts the flame above the plates and below the line of sight across it. Three of them stood together on a sideboard is where the difference between the sizes reads. On its own the small one suits a bedside, a bathroom shelf or the end of a mantelpiece.
The candlestick is cast: a mould is made in sand, the metal is melted, poured in and left to cool, then broken out. Sand holds shape loosely, which is where the pitting and the uneven flange come from, and no two pieces come out of the mould the same. The antique brass finish goes on afterwards. The Shani is made in small, medium and large, and this is the small. No candle is included.

Frequently Asked
What candle does it take?
A dinner candle. The cup is a plain socket and sits 17cm above the surface.
Is it sold as a set?
No. This is one candlestick. The Shani is made in small, medium and large.
Why is the surface uneven?
It is sand cast. The mould is made in sand, which holds shape loosely, so the surface comes out rough and the patina falls differently on every piece.
How do I look after it?
Wash it with a mild dish soap and warm water after every use so wax does not build up. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away, which will damage the finish.
Does it get hot in use?
Yes. Stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
