Description

A candlestick 23cm tall on a foot 6cm across. The stem is cut into a stack of angular facets that swell and draw in twice on the way up, so light breaks across it in flat planes instead of running round it. A plain deep cup sits at the top with a slightly wavy rim, and the foot opens out into a wide cone finishing in a rolled edge where it meets the surface. The antique brass reads warm rather than bright, and the cast surface is pitted in places.

The cup takes a dinner candle and is deep enough to hold one upright on its own. At 23cm this is the middle of three, with 17cm below it and 27.5cm above, and the three stand together down the length of a table at stepped heights. A 6cm foot asks for very little surface, so a pair will stand either side of something without closing in on it.

The casting is made in sand. A mould is formed in sand, the metal is heated until it runs, poured in, and the casting broken out once it has cooled. Sand casting is not a precise process, which is where the rough surface and the irregular patination come from, and no two candlesticks carry the same marks. The piece is then given its antique brass finish. The candle is not included.

How do I look after it?

Warm water and a mild dish soap after each use will take off any wax before it builds up, and harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners want keeping away from the finish. Seat the candle securely, expect the brass to get hot in use, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
