Description

The Shahar is a wall clock cut as a single disc of mango wood, 81cm across and 4cm thick. The whole face is carved by hand into overlapping oval scallops that run in rings out from the centre, and a plain raised band is left round the rim. There are no numerals and no minute markers: two slim tapered hands turn on a brass pin at the centre, and nothing else sits on the face.

At 81cm across this is a clock for a wall that can take it on its own, not one to hang in a group. On a wall above a chair it fills the space between the chair back and the ceiling line. The carving takes side light unevenly, so the face reads as texture from across a room and it is the hands that carry at that distance.

The clock is mango wood, and the disc is made up from boards, so the grain and the tone change across the face and the joins run as straight lines through the carving. Every scallop is cut by hand, so no two faces are alike. The hands are a plain tapered metal, dark against the wood.
