Description

Our Sarika star is a Christmas decoration made of iron, hung from a loop of jute string. Every one of its five points is covered in a close, crumbly texture of raised flecks, so the gold catches the light unevenly and looks rich rather than flat. It is 15cm long and 15cm tall, a good size for a hanging ornament: big enough to be seen on a full tree from across the room, yet compact enough for a single branch, a window or a wreath. It weighs 0.1KG.

The obvious home is the Christmas tree, but we like it just as much away from the branches. Tie it to a garland of greenery strung along a mantelpiece or the edge of a shelf, where it sits among paper and wooden decorations without getting lost. Hang it from a window catch so it turns against the daylight, from a cupboard knob in the hall, or at the centre of a wreath on an inside door. Because the jute loop is long, it can drop below a shelf edge or a curtain pole and still look deliberate. It also makes a thoughtful extra on a wrapped present for a friend who decorates early.

The star itself is iron, with its textured surface spread across its face and a small metal ring fixed at the top point. The jute string threads through that ring and is knotted into a loop, so it is ready to hang straight away.
