Description

This is a deep stoneware bowl, 15cm across and 8cm tall, glazed in blue and holding 700ml. That capacity makes it a proper everyday bowl rather than a small dish: enough for a full serving of porridge, soup, ramen or a lunchtime salad. The reactive glaze is what gives it its character. Reactive glazes move and pool as they fire, so the blue runs lighter in some places and deeper in others, and no two bowls come out quite alike. A fine contrasting line traces the rim, and seen from above the edge runs gently irregular rather than perfectly round, which gives it a relaxed, informal look.

It earns its place at the breakfast table first, but it moves easily through the day: soup or stew at lunch, rice and curry at supper, a side of greens at a dinner party. Because it goes in the oven, you can bake a single portion of crumble or a small gratin and bring it straight to the table in the same bowl. The microwave suits it too, so leftovers can be warmed without decanting into another dish. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, which makes it a sensible choice for a busy family kitchen as well as for a calm weekend table laid for two.
