Description

This stoneware vase behaves more like a small sculpture: a flat, flask-shaped body with a narrow neck, flanked by two open ring handles whose outer edges are scalloped like little suns. It is 37cm long, 8.5cm wide and 26cm tall, and it weighs 1.8KG. Each face carries a hand-painted motif of concentric droplet lines, and the rings are marked with short radiating stripes. The two faces carry the motif in different colours, so turning the vase round changes its whole multicoloured look.

Being only 8.5cm wide, it fits where a rounder vase would crowd: a narrow shelf, a mantelpiece, a windowsill or the back of a sideboard. At 37cm long it makes a good centrepiece along a console table or bookcase, with room for a few stems in the opening at the top. It sits happily in a living room, hallway, bedroom or study, and it makes a cheerful present for someone who likes colour and pattern around the house. Left empty, the shape still holds its own as a decorative object on a shelf.

It is made from 100% stoneware and finished by hand painting, so the brush marks show in the stripes and lines, which is part of its charm. Stoneware is clay fired to a dense, hard body. It is not suitable for the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven, so it is a piece to look after by hand. For styling, stand it against a plain wall where both scalloped rings can be seen, or set it beside simpler ceramics so its pattern leads; a loose arrangement of tall, airy stems keeps the outline clear.
