Description

Samaya is a panel of natural linen stitched by hand in cotton thread and set in a mango wood frame, 60cm tall and 40cm wide. Four columns of cream zigzag run down the linen, two narrow ones at the outside and two wider and denser ones between them, and every stitch stands off the ground so the pattern catches light from the side. The design is drawn from traditional Indian Brahmic script, redrawn as texture rather than as lettering, and the linen is left its own colour so the weave reads as fabric rather than as a painted surface.

At 60 by 40cm it hangs as a single piece above a console, a chest of drawers or a bed head, and the frame is only 3cm deep so it sits close against the wall rather than standing off it. The panel is portrait, half as tall again as it is wide, so it takes a narrow run of wall between a door and a corner as readily as an open one. It was made to hang alongside the Birala hand stitched wall art.

The ground is linen, the thread is cotton and the frame is mango wood. Every stitch is placed by hand, which takes patience and precision and leaves subtle variations, so no two panels come out the same. The back is faced in hessian, stitched in around all four sides, and carries a black metal plate at each top corner to hang from.
