Description
The Samay is a wide, low earthenware mug, 8.5cm tall and 11.5cm across including the handle, holding 500ml. The body is broadest at the shoulder and draws in towards the foot, and a large round loop handle stands off one side, big enough to take more than one finger. From just under the rim down to a plain band at the foot, the whole surface is pressed into a dense field of rounded dimples. The glaze breaks over them: pale oatmeal on the raised faces, amber and rust-brown pooled in the hollows and the lines between, with a grey-blue band running round the rim and out along the handle.
500ml is double a teacup and more than most mugs hold, which is what the shape is for: it is wide rather than tall, so the drink cools faster than it would in a straight-sided beaker and there is more of it to begin with. At 8.5cm it goes under a coffee machine spout and sits low enough on a tray not to topple. The dimples give the hand something to hold that a smooth glaze does not, which matters on a mug this wide when it is full. It is dishwasher safe, microwave safe and food safe.
Each mug is shaped in a textured mould, which is where the dimples come from, and the glaze is applied by hand and allowed to move during firing. That is why the rust and amber gather in some patches and barely show in others, and why the grey of the rim runs to a different depth on every mug. The Samay mug is also made in a darker plum colourway.

Frequently Asked
How much does it hold?
500ml.
How big is it?
8.5cm tall and 11.5cm across including the handle.
Can it go in the dishwasher or the microwave?
Yes to both, and it is food safe.
Is the glaze the same on every mug?
No. It is applied by hand and moves during firing, so the amber and rust gather differently on each one and the rim band runs to a different depth.
What other colours are there?
The Samay mug is also made in plum.
How do I look after it?
Wash it after every use so it does not stain, using a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. Handle it carefully, because the rim will chip.
