Description

An oversized mug in earthenware, 8.5cm tall and holding 500ml, with a large round loop handle. The body is dimpled all over, pressed into a honeycomb of shallow rounded hollows that run from the rim down to a smooth flared foot. The plum glaze pools dark in the hollows and breaks to a coppery brown over the raised ground between them, so the colour shifts as the mug turns.

At 500ml it holds noticeably more than a standard mug, and at 8.5cm it is wider than it is tall, which is what gives it the bowl-like look. The dimpling gives the hand something to hold, and the wall is thick enough that the outside stays comfortable when the mug is full. The glaze catches the light along the top of every dimple.

The mug is earthenware, shaped in a textured mould that presses the dimples in, and the plum glaze is put on by hand. The tone develops during firing, so the depth of the colour and the way it settles into the hollows vary from mug to mug. The Samay mug is also made in a natural colourway.
