Our Salino console table is a slim piece in blue, made of MDF and firwood with a lacquered finish, and its character is all in the legs. Four bobbin-shaped legs, like strings of beads, run its full height and finish in a neat foot. Between them sit three flat surfaces, a top and two open shelves, so it works as a console table and a low open bookcase at once. It is 90cm long, 30cm wide and 81cm tall, and weighs 9.24KG.

At 30cm wide it is shallow enough for a narrow hallway, where the top takes a lamp, a tray for keys and the post, and the shelves below hold shoes, baskets or a stack of books. It suits a living room just as well, against a wall or behind a sofa, and in a bedroom or a home office it gives open storage for books, ceramics and plants without the bulk of a cabinet. Anyone who likes colour in a room will enjoy it: the blue gives it presence, while the open sides keep it light to look at.

Lacquer is a hard, sealed coat, and here it gives the MDF and firwood one even layer of colour across the top, both shelves and every curve of the legs. The table needs assembling, and the maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download. At 9.24KG it is easy to lift and move into place once it is built. For styling, keep the top simple with a lamp and one or two taller pieces, and let the shelves carry the colour: warm yellows, reds and natural wood look especially good against the blue.
