Description

A pocket journal bound in leather, A6 at 11 by 15cm and 1.5cm thick. The cover is a single piece of tanned leather that runs round the block of paper and overlaps at the front edge, held shut by a leather band that wraps the middle and ties. The paper is thick and creamy with the edges left untrimmed, and it is stitched into the spine rather than glued. The leather is smooth to the hand, with the grain and the small marks of the hide left showing.

At 11 by 15cm it goes in a coat pocket or the side of a bag, and the whole journal weighs 200 grams. The band holds the covers shut, so the pages stay closed and flat when it is carried loose. The same journal is made in a larger A5 size.

The cover is leather and the pages are recycled cotton rag. The leather is untreated, dyed with vegetable extract and tree bark, and the hide is a by-product. The paper is tree free, made from rag rather than wood pulp, each sheet formed by hand and dried in the sun before it is bound in and stitched. One maker takes a journal from start to finish, working within a cooperative of families.
