Description

The Ruala is a square lantern 44cm tall and 25cm across, with a domed metal top, a swing handle above it and four ribbed glass panels below. One of the four panels is a door on a hinge, held shut by a small wire catch at the side. The glass is silvered rather than plain, and the silvering is worn and blotched, so the panels read as old mirror with the reeding running top to bottom. The metal is mottled brass with rust and darker patina across the top and the base.

At 44cm this works on the floor as readily as on a table. The reeding breaks the flame into vertical lines, so the light comes through as bands rather than a single point, and the silvered ground behind it throws the glow back out again. The door opens at the front to reach the candle, and the whole lantern weighs 3.1kg. Indoor use only.

The panels are mercury glass and the frame is iron in a brass finish. The glass is cut by hand and given its aged silvering before the frame is cut and assembled around it, so the blotching on every panel is different and the marks where the frame is joined are left showing. It takes a pillar candle, standing on the base.
