Description

A small tealight holder in recycled glass, 9cm tall and 9cm across. The upper part is a smooth frosted silver that light passes through, and the lower third is encrusted with chips of glass pressed into the surface, rough and granular against the smoothness above it. The line where the two meet wanders rather than running level. The rim is plain and the holder is open at the top.

At 9cm this is the small size, and it takes a tealight rather than a pillar. Lit, the frosted upper part glows evenly and the chips below break the light into points. A row of them runs along a mantelpiece or down the centre of a table. It is for indoor use.

The glass is recycled and each holder is blown by hand, then silvered by hand using a traditional mirroring technique, which is what gives it the softly aged tone. Chips of recycled glass are pressed into the surface to make the encrusted band. Because both stages are done by hand, the line between smooth and rough falls differently on every holder. This is a festive version of the Ngolo range, which runs to tealight holders in aged smoke and in amber. The Riyara is also made in a medium at 13cm.
