Description

A lidded laundry basket woven from jute, 40cm tall and 40cm across. The weave carries a kilim pattern of stacked diamonds in rust on a natural ground, each diamond ringed by finer lines, and the pattern runs right round the body and over the rim of the lid. A soft rope handle is stitched to each side, and the basket is lined in cotton.

At 40cm in both directions it is a full sized basket, and the lid sits over the top so what is inside stays out of sight. That suits a bedroom, a landing or a bathroom, where a basket stands in the open rather than in a cupboard, and the two rope handles mean it can be carried across a room instead of dragged. It takes towels and blankets as readily as laundry.

The basket is jute throughout, with a cotton lining. It is woven on a pit loom, where the maker sits at ground level with the loom set into the ground and works the pedals by foot, which is what allows a pattern this fine to be woven rather than printed. Jute is a rain fed crop and needs little fertiliser or pesticide to grow. Indoor use only.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

40cm tall and 40cm across.

Does it have a lid?

Yes, and a cotton lining inside.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Yes. It is for indoor use only, and a bathroom, a bedroom or a landing all suit it.

Will the colour fade?

It may in sunlight, so keep it out of direct light.

How do I look after it?

Go over it regularly with a soft bristle brush to lift dust, and wipe any dirt away with a mild soap and water on a soft cloth. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners will damage it.
