Description
The Medway coaster set comprises four round ceramic coasters, each 11cm diameter, with a reactive ochre glaze over a smooth cream-toned ceramic centre. The reactive glaze process means each coaster shows different tonal variation and surface pattern within the ochre and brown spectrum — no two coasters in the set are identical. The set is tied together with a cotton ribbon for storage or gifting.
Designed for dining tables, coffee tables and side tables where hot drinks or cold glasses need surface protection, each coaster absorbs minor condensation and provides a heat-resistant barrier for teapots, mugs and wine glasses. The 11cm diameter accommodates most standard mug and glass bases without overhang. The 1cm thickness gives sufficient mass to stay in place when a glass is lifted, reducing slippage on polished wood or marble surfaces.
The ochre reactive glaze produces warm brown, amber and caramel tones with occasional darker mottling where the glaze pools during firing. The cream ceramic centre visible through the glaze adds contrast and lightens the overall appearance compared to solid-colour coasters. The smooth finish means the surface can be wiped clean after spills, though prolonged water pooling should be avoided as ceramic is porous. The set weighs 0.25kg combined, so it feels substantial without being heavy.
Each coaster is individually glazed and fired, meaning the exact pattern, tone and mottling differ between pieces. This is characteristic of reactive glazing rather than a defect — the variation is part of the product's design. The cotton ribbon can be removed for daily use and retied for storage when the coasters are stacked together.

Frequently Asked
Why does each coaster look different?
The reactive glaze process creates unpredictable tonal variation during firing, so each coaster shows different patterns of ochre, brown and cream. This is intentional and characteristic of reactive-glazed ceramics.
Are they dishwasher safe?
Ceramic coasters can generally be washed in a dishwasher, but hand washing with warm soapy water and immediate drying will extend the life of the reactive glaze finish.
Do they absorb liquid?
Ceramic is slightly porous, so the coasters will absorb small amounts of condensation over time. Wipe spills promptly and allow the coasters to dry fully between uses to prevent staining or moisture retention.
What size mugs and glasses do they suit?
The 11cm diameter accommodates most standard mug bases (typically 7-9cm) and wine glass bases (typically 6-8cm) with margin to spare. Very large cappuccino cups or oversized mugs may overhang slightly.
