Description
The Medway is a set of four round ceramic coasters finished with a reactive blue and green glaze that varies across each piece. Each coaster measures 11cm in diameter and 1cm thick, with a smooth glazed top surface and an unglazed base that grips table surfaces without scratching. The reactive glaze creates irregular gradients of charcoal grey, teal and soft cream that differ between individual coasters depending on kiln position during firing.
Designed for hot drinks, cold glasses and general surface protection on dining tables, coffee tables and desk surfaces, the coasters sit flat and stable under mugs, tumblers and stemmed glassware. The 11cm diameter accommodates most standard mug bases with margin to spare, while the 1cm thickness keeps hot ceramics raised clear of wood and lacquered finishes. The set is tied with a cotton ribbon for gifting or storage.
The reactive glaze is applied before firing and reacts unpredictably to kiln heat, oxygen levels and neighbouring pieces, producing the tonal shifts visible in the image. No two coasters match exactly — some show more grey, others more teal or cream. The smooth glazed surface is non-porous and wipes clean with a damp cloth, though the glaze may show water marks if left to air-dry rather than towel-dried after washing.

Frequently Asked
Are the coasters dishwasher safe?
Ceramic coasters with reactive glaze can generally be washed in a dishwasher, though hand-washing with warm soapy water and immediate towel-drying preserves the glaze finish longer. The reactive glaze may dull slightly over repeated dishwasher cycles.
Will the glaze match the image exactly?
No. Reactive glazing creates unpredictable colour variation during firing, so each coaster shows different proportions of grey, teal, blue and cream. The overall palette will be similar to the image, but the specific pattern on your set will differ.
Do the coasters scratch wooden tables?
The base of each coaster is unglazed ceramic, which grips surfaces without slipping but can scratch soft lacquer finishes if dragged. Lift rather than slide the coasters when repositioning them on polished wood.
Can they be used under hot teapots or coffee pots?
Yes. The ceramic can handle the heat from a freshly boiled kettle or teapot base. However, the 11cm diameter may be too small for large teapots — check the base diameter of your pot before relying on a single coaster for support.
