Description

These are four stoneware bowls in pink, each 14.5cm across and 7cm tall, finished in a reactive glaze. A reactive glaze moves and pools as it fires, and here it has run in darker streaks from a speckled rim down to a deeper pool at the foot, with a glossy inside that catches the light. Each bowl holds 650ml, which is a generous everyday size: deep enough for a full serving of soup, porridge or cereal without slopping over the edge on the way to the table. Because the glaze moves in the kiln, no two bowls in the set look exactly alike, and we think that is much of their charm.

They suit a kitchen where the same bowls do several jobs through the day: granola and yoghurt in the morning, noodles or ramen at lunch, a side salad or rice beside dinner, and a scoop of ice cream to finish. Four bowls serve a household of four at one sitting, or a couple with spares. The pink is soft enough to sit happily beside plain plates, and lively enough to bring some colour to an open shelf or a dresser when the bowls are not in use.

Stoneware is fired hard and dense, so it stands up well to daily use and holds warmth a little longer than thinner pottery. The bowls go in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so leftovers can be reheated in the bowl and a crumble can bake in one and come straight to the table.
