Ratnam Large Giant Glass Bauble - Antique Pink

The large Ratnam is 25cm tall and 9cm across, a faceted glass drop hung from an antique brass cap. Flat panels run from the widest point just below the cap down to a single point at the base, meeting along sharp ridges that catch the light in lines rather than across a curve. The glass is a dusty rose under a mercury finish laid on unevenly, dense in patches and thin in others, so the colour reads deeper on some faces than on others.

At 25cm it needs clear air under it. Hung on its own from a beam, a curtain pole or a hook it swings free, and on a tree it wants a branch near the outside with nothing sitting below it. It is made alongside a small at 20cm, and suspended near lights the faceted sides pick up separate points of light instead of one reflection.

The glass is recycled and each one is blown by hand into the faceted form, so the ridges do not fall in the same places twice and the mercury varies in depth from bauble to bauble. The cap is antique brass with a stamped edge, a small finial and a ring, and a knotted suede tie runs through the ring. The Ratnam is also made in a merlot, and the range runs to smaller baubles in sets.

Not exactly. The mercury finish is laid on by hand, so the depth of the pink and the run of the speckling differ on every bauble.

How do I look after it?

Take dust off with a dry, soft cloth and handle it with care. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from the finish, and keep it indoors.
