Ramie is a pair of grey stoneware mugs, each holding 350ml, hand-painted and finished in a reactive glaze. The two are not twins: one carries rows of peaked triangles running round the body, the other a ring of long vertical brushstrokes, and both are flecked all over with a speckled glaze in light and dark grey. Each is 9cm across and 9.5cm tall, with a gently rounded body and a looped handle. Side by side they make a pair that belongs together without being identical, which is much of their charm.

At 350ml these are proper mugs, roomy enough for a full cup of tea or a milky coffee rather than a quick espresso. Sold as a set of two, they suit a couple's breakfast table, a pot of tea shared with a friend on a slow weekend, or a pair kept ready by the kettle in the kitchen. Because the patterns differ, each person can claim one as their own and there is no confusion over whose is whose. They are just as at home on a desk through a long working morning as they are on an open kitchen shelf between uses.

Stoneware is dense and holds heat well, which makes it a comfortable material for a hot drink held in both hands.
