Description

The QTX DMX-D4 is a 4-way DMX512 signal distributor that takes one DMX input and splits it to four opto-isolated 3-pin XLR outputs. The unit includes a DMX loop-through/termination switch, allowing the input to pass through to another device or be terminated at the distributor depending on chain topology. Each output pair is opto-isolated to protect the control system from electrical faults and ground loops in downstream lighting fixtures.

Designed for theatre rigs, event installations and touring lighting systems, the DMX-D4 allows a single console output to control multiple fixture sub-chains without signal degradation over distance. The mains-powered amplifier regenerates the DMX signal at each output, supporting cable runs of up to 300m per output when using twisted-pair DMX cable. LED indicators on the front panel confirm signal presence at the input and each output, making fault diagnosis faster during setup or troubleshooting.

The distributor measures 248 x 165 x 70mm and weighs 1.5kg, fitting comfortably into a rack bag or case for mobile use. The metal housing provides adequate shielding in electrically noisy environments. All connectors are 3-pin XLR (not 5-pin), so the unit is compatible with the majority of DMX lighting fixtures and control systems in use across entertainment venues. The IEC mains input accepts standard UK kettle leads and operates on 230Vac 50Hz.

Frequently Asked

What does opto-isolated mean?

Opto-isolation uses an optical coupling to electrically separate the input and output circuits. This prevents electrical faults or ground loops in one fixture chain from damaging the DMX console or affecting other outputs. The DMX-D4 isolates outputs in pairs, so outputs 1-2 share one isolation stage and outputs 3-4 share another.

When should I use the termination switch?

Use the DMX terminated position when the DMX-D4 is the last device on the input chain. Use the loop-through position if you need to pass the input signal on to another distributor or fixture after the DMX-D4. Correct termination reduces signal reflections that can cause flickering or dropped channels.

What cable length can each output support?

Each output can drive up to 300m of twisted-pair DMX cable (such as Belden 9842 or similar 120-ohm cable) before signal degradation becomes a risk. Shorter runs under 100m work reliably with most cable types.

Does it work with 5-pin DMX fixtures?

The DMX-D4 uses 3-pin XLR connectors. To connect to 5-pin DMX fixtures, use a 3-pin to 5-pin XLR adapter cable. The DMX512 signal itself is compatible. The extra two pins in 5-pin XLR are typically unused in most lighting applications.
