Description

A round tray, 41cm across and 5cm deep, carved all over in mango wood. The face is worked in small oval gouge cuts that spiral out from a rosette at the centre, ring after ring, each ring angled to follow the circle, and the rim finishes in a band of rounded scallops that runs right round the edge. Two dark metal strap handles are fixed to the rim opposite one another. The carved recesses hold a darker tone than the flat wood between them.

At 41cm across it takes a jug and a set of glasses with room round them, and the handles stand clear enough to get a hand through when it is loaded. The face sits below the level of the rim all the way round, so a glass set down near the edge stays on it.

The wood is mango. Each tray is carved by hand, so the rings of cuts fall differently and the grain runs its own way on every one. A controlled flame is passed over the surface afterwards to burn it lightly, which brings the grain up, and the piece is smoothed by hand after that. Pyaar also runs to bowls in two sizes and to a serving tray and bowl together.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

41cm across and 5cm deep.

What is it made from?

Mango wood, with metal handles.

Why is the wood darker in the cuts?

A controlled flame is passed over the surface to burn it lightly and bring the grain up, and the burn sits deepest in the carved recesses.

Will two trays match?

No. Each one is carved by hand, so the pattern and the grain vary from tray to tray.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water and dry it at once with a cloth rather than leaving it to soak, so the wood does not take on too much moisture and warp or crack.
