Pedra Side Plate - Pewter

The Pedra side plate is 21cm across and 2.5cm deep, in earthenware under a soft grey glaze that moves between green and stone depending on the light. The outline is not a true circle and the rim lifts in a shallow curve rather than lying flat. A single line of dark chocolate brown runs right at the outer edge, and a paler ring marks the step where the rim meets the well.

At 21cm this is a side plate rather than a starter plate: bread, cheese, a pudding or a small course. Because the rim lifts instead of lying flat, a little oil or sauce stays at the edge rather than running off. It stands on a foot ring rather than flat on the table. On a bare wooden table it sits close enough in tone to the wood that the brown line at the edge is what separates them.

The plate is earthenware and is hand finished in Portugal, and the grey glaze takes its own tonal variations across each piece, so the depth of the colour and the weight of the brown line differ from plate to plate. Will every plate look the same?

No. The glaze is hand finished, so the grey runs deeper in some places than others and the brown line at the edge is thicker on some plates than on others.

How do I look after it?

Wash it after each use so it does not stain, using a mild detergent, and do not leave it soaking. The edge will chip if it is knocked.
