Pedra Dinner Plate - Pewter

The Pedra is a 28cm earthenware dinner plate with a broad flat rim and a shallow well. The glaze across the well is a soft grey that turns towards green in daylight, and it pools unevenly, so the tone is never flat. Dark chocolate brown edges the plate in two thin lines, one at the outer lip and one where the rim drops into the well. The underside and the foot ring are left a pale oatmeal.

At 28cm across this is a full dinner plate rather than a side or a starter plate, and at 3cm deep the well takes a sauce but not a soup. The well is broad and only slightly recessed, so a plate of food sits well inside the brown line rather than spilling onto the rim. The rim itself is wide and flat enough to carry a knife and fork laid across it between courses. The plate stands on a raised foot ring rather than flat on the table, so in a stack it lifts away from the plate below it rather than sitting flush against it.

The plate is earthenware and is hand finished in Portugal, so the depth of the grey shifts from piece to piece and the brown line at the rim runs thicker in some places and thinner in others. How do I look after it?

Wash it after every use to stop it staining. Use a mild detergent and do not leave it to soak. Handle it carefully, because the edge will chip.
