Description

A rectangular serving tray in mango wood, 46cm by 31cm with sides 5cm high and a cut-out slot handle through each of two opposite sides. The base is a patchwork: small blocks of mango wood, every one a slightly different tone, laid into four triangular fields that meet at the centre so the grain runs out diagonally towards the corners. The sides and the rim are cut from single lengths and left plain, so the patchwork is the only pattern on it.

At 46 by 31cm it carries two mugs and a plate with room to spare, and the 5cm sides hold a cup upright while the tray is being lifted. The handles are cut through the sides rather than added onto them, so nothing stands proud of the outline and the tray sits flat wherever it is put down. It weighs 1.24kg empty.

The tray is mango wood throughout, left in a natural finish with nothing added to even out the tone, which is what makes the patchwork read at all: the blocks are simply different pieces of the same timber. The wood is a by-product. Mango is planted as a fruit crop, and the timber only becomes available when a tree stops bearing and is taken out to make room for a new one. The Pawi range also holds a round tray at the same height, and a breakfast tray.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

46cm by 31cm, with sides 5cm high.

What is the patchwork?

Small blocks of mango wood, each a slightly different tone, laid into four triangular fields that meet at the centre of the base.

Does it have handles?

Yes. A slot is cut through each of two opposite sides, so nothing stands proud of the outline.

Is there a round one?

Yes. The Pawi range holds a round tray at the same height, and a breakfast tray.

How do I look after it?

Wash mango wood in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it immediately. Rub an edible oil such as olive or walnut into the surface with a cloth to feed and protect it, bearing in mind that oil may darken the tone. The colour will shift over time.
