Description

This handleless stoneware cup holds 195ml, which makes it a coffee or tea cup rather than a mug: the right measure for a milky coffee or a slow cup of loose-leaf tea. The upper wall and the whole of the inside carry a pink reactive glaze that softens and speckles as it runs downwards, breaking into a frosted, crystalline band before it stops cleanly above a bare stoneware foot. The rim is picked out with a fine line where the glaze thins over the clay, and the bare foot tapers gently inwards to a narrower base.

With no handle, you cradle it in the palm, which suits a first coffee of the day at the kitchen table, tea from a shared pot at the weekend, or water and juice at breakfast. It also makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who keeps a cupboard of mismatched cups, since a reactive glaze sits happily beside other glazes and plain stoneware.
