Description

Our Paula butter dish is made from stoneware and finished in a white reactive glaze: a shallow rectangular tray with a deep cover that lifts straight off and sits back down inside the rim. It measures 17.5cm long, 11.5cm wide and 8cm tall, and holds 100ml under the cover. A reactive glaze moves as it fires, pooling and streaking rather than lying flat, so no two pieces settle in quite the same way. Stoneware is dense and hard wearing, and at 0.79KG the dish has a settled, solid weight on the table.

It belongs on the breakfast table, beside the toast rack and the teapot, where the cover keeps the butter neat and protected until someone reaches for the knife. At 17.5cm long it takes up little room, so it sits comfortably on a small kitchen counter next to the bread board or among the plates on a busy brunch table. It suits anyone who likes to keep the butter out where it is needed rather than fetching it each time, and it makes a thoughtful housewarming present for someone filling their first kitchen. Bring it out for a weekend breakfast, an afternoon tea with warm scones, or a supper where the bread goes round in a basket.

Under its reactive glaze the dish is 100% stoneware, and looking after it is simple: both the tray and the cover go in the dishwasher with the rest of the breakfast things. It can also go in the microwave and the oven, so it never needs special handling in a busy kitchen, though most days it will simply stay at the table. Because a reactive glaze never repeats itself exactly, each dish carries its own run of pools and streaks across the cover. Pair it with plain stoneware plates and a linen cloth, put a fresh loaf and a pot of jam alongside, and let the glaze do the talking.

Frequently Asked

What is the butter dish made of?

It is made from 100% stoneware and finished with a reactive glaze, which gives the surface its pooled and streaked look.

Can the butter dish go in the dishwasher?

Yes. Both the tray and the cover can go in the dishwasher, and the dish can also go in the microwave and the oven.

How big is the butter dish?

It measures 17.5cm long, 11.5cm wide and 8cm tall, with a capacity of 100ml under the cover, and it weighs 0.79KG.

Does the butter dish come with a lid?

Yes. It comes as a shallow rectangular tray with a deep cover that sits inside the rim, keeping the butter covered at the table.

Will every butter dish look exactly the same?

Not exactly. A reactive glaze moves as it fires, so the pools and streaks on each dish settle a little differently, giving every piece its own character.
