Description

A pair of small stoneware mugs, 6.5cm tall and 8cm across, holding 200ml each. The sides are straight and the handle is a simple loop set square to the body. Each mug is painted by hand on a cream ground in soft bands of sand, with columns of short dashes and dots running between the bands. The painting is done by hand on the soft clay before firing, so the bands vary in width and in depth of colour round each mug.

At 6.5cm tall and holding 200ml these are small mugs, the size for a short coffee rather than a long one. Two come in a set, so they stand as a pair on a tray or a board. From across a table the sand bands read as a soft vertical stripe, and the columns of dashes only show close to.

The mugs are ceramic. The brushwork takes precision and control, and only a small number of makers are trained to do it, which is why no two mugs carry the same marks. The Patthar mugs are made in three colourways, and in this small size and a large one.
