Description

A ceramic dinner plate 27.5cm across, with a wide sloping rim around a plain cream well. Painted blocks in a clay tone run one after another round that rim, and between every pair a row of small dark dots runs outward to the edge. The blocks are not uniform: the brush leaves more pigment at the start of a stroke than at the end, and the edge of each block wavers where the hand moved.

At 27.5cm the plate takes a full meal and still leaves the painted rim clear of it, which is what a rim this wide is for. The plate is 2cm deep overall, so the well is a shallow one and suits a plated meal rather than anything loose.

The plate is ceramic and the painting is laid on by hand, block by block and dot by dot, so no two rims come out alike. It is dishwasher safe and safe for food. Eighteen Patthar pieces are made, from mugs and egg cups up to a teapot and a serving bowl, and a set of twelve covers a table in one go.

Why does the rim vary from plate to plate?

Every block and every row of dots is brushed on individually, so the width of a block and the depth of its colour change from one plate to the next.

How do I look after it?

Wash it after every use so it does not stain, using a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. Handle it carefully, because ceramic chips.
