Description
A cup and saucer in ceramic, the cup 5.5cm high and 9cm across, with the saucer wider again. The clay is left soft in tone and each piece is hand painted, the brushwork laid on stroke by stroke, so the marks fall differently on every cup and every saucer. The cup is a teacup shape and the saucer curves up at its edge rather than lying flat.
At this size the cup is made for a short drink rather than a long one, so it belongs with morning coffee or afternoon tea rather than with a mug of either. The curve of the saucer catches a drip off the rim and gives the cup a seat that holds it in place when the two are carried together. The soft clay tones put the set with plain wood and unbleached linen rather than against strong colour.
The body is ceramic, painted piece by piece with fine brushwork that takes a steady hand and is done by only a handful of makers. Because each piece is painted on its own, no two cups carry the same marks. The same clay and the same brushwork run through a wider set of pieces, among them plates, bowls, a teapot, a butter dish, egg cups, jugs and mugs.

Frequently Asked
What comes in the set?
One cup and one saucer. The cup stands 5.5cm high and measures 9cm across, and the saucer is wider than the cup.
Is it dishwasher safe?
Yes, and food safe with it.
Will two of them match?
Not exactly. Every piece is hand painted, so the brushwork falls differently on each one.
What else is made in the same design?
Plates, bowls, a teapot, a butter dish, egg cups, jugs and mugs, all in the same clay and brushwork.
How do I look after it?
Wash it after every use to prevent staining, using a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. Handle it with care, as the ceramic will chip.
