Description

The BQ-CC63U is the eight bay charger in the Panasonic Eneloop family, and it takes AA and AAA nickel metal hydride cells in any mix from one to eight. Each bay has its own contact and its own LED indicator, so a cell that has finished and one still working are told apart at a glance. The pack calls it a smart charger with individual control, and that is the part worth understanding: every cell is assessed and charged on its own rather than in pairs, so a tired cell and a fresh one can sit side by side without the fresh one being pushed to keep up. The pack gives a charging time of approximately 5.0 hours for two AA cells.

Eight bays is more than a single gadget calls for and exactly right for a household that has moved over to rechargeables. Game controllers, a camera flash, wireless keyboards and mice, remote controls, torches and children's toys between them account for a drawer of AA and AAA cells, and this handles the lot in one sitting rather than two at a time across an evening. It is mains powered and the pack marks it as auto voltage, which makes it a sensible one to take abroad with a suitable travel adaptor. What do the eight lights tell me?

There is one LED for each bay, so you can tell which individual cell is still charging and which has finished rather than judging the whole load at once.

Can I put ordinary alkaline batteries in it?

No. Only rechargeable nickel metal hydride cells should ever be charged. Single use alkaline cells are not designed to be recharged in any charger.
