Description

The Omari is a candlestick turned from mango wood, 23.5cm tall and 12.5cm across. A wide flat disc sits at the top, pinched in below it to a narrow waist, and from there the body flares out in a long smooth cone to a foot as wide as the top. Fine grooves are etched over the whole surface, running vertically and fanning out where the profile turns. The top of the disc is lined with metal and carries a small pin at its centre.

A pillar candle stands on the disc rather than dropping into a socket, so the width of the candle is a choice. At 23.5cm the candlestick reads as its own object on a shelf or a mantelpiece, and it stands beside the smaller Omari, each taking a pillar candle. The candle is not included.

The wood is mango and the disc is lined with iron. Each one is etched by hand, so the depth and the spacing of the grooves differ from candlestick to candlestick and the grain surfaces in different places. Mango is a fast growing tree and the timber is usually a by-product of growing the fruit in India, which is what makes it available at all. The Omari is made in two sizes: this one at 23.5cm and a shorter, rounder one at 15cm.
