Description

A hanging rail for a bathroom wall, 39cm across, made up of a hammered round bar carried between two flat wall plates. The bar is faceted along its whole length rather than turned smooth, so the antique brass catches the light unevenly from one end to the other. Each plate is a rectangle with rounded corners, drilled for two fixings, one above the bar and one below it.

The rail stands 8cm clear of the wall, so a folded bath towel hangs off the plaster rather than against it, and the 39cm span takes one bath towel or a pair of hand towels. That puts it on the wall beside a basin or at the end of a bath. Fixed above a low bench, it takes towels folded over the bar.

The rail is stainless steel under an antique brass finish, and the finish is lacquered so that it stands up to moisture and steam. It is sandcast, which means molten stainless steel poured into a mould packed from sand and left to cool. Sandcast work holds its shape loosely, so the surface comes out rough and the patination runs irregularly, and no two rails carry it the same way. The same rail is made in a larger size.
