Description
The Okuma is a black ceramic vase in the classic bottle shape: a rounded teardrop body that rises into a long, narrow neck. It stands 22cm tall and measures 11cm across, a size that sits comfortably on a side table or a shelf without crowding it. The opening at the top is 1.8cm across, which settles what it does best: a single stem, a slim sprig of eucalyptus or a few stalks of dried grass, rather than a full bunch of flowers. Inside, it holds 0.7 litres.
Because the neck is so slim, the vase does much of the arranging for you. A single branch is held close at the neck, so even one cutting from the garden looks deliberate rather than lost. It suits a side table beside the sofa in a living room, a bookshelf, a hallway console or a dining room sideboard. The deep black reads clearly against pale walls and against light or dark wood alike. It also works well as part of a group: set it beside vases of different heights and colours and the contrast gives a shelf or a tabletop real interest. Left empty, the teardrop shape is strong enough to stand alone as an object in its own right.
Ceramic is fired clay, a hard and dense material. The vase has a smooth, even surface from the base of its body to the top of the neck. The black colour carries right up to the rim, so no contrasting edge breaks the silhouette. At 0.51KG it is easy to lift down from a high shelf and move from room to room. As a practical note, choose stems slim enough to slip through the 1.8cm opening, and trim them so the foliage starts a little above the neck rather than resting against the rim.
