Oko Small Giant Glass Bauble - Matt Teal

The Oko is a hand-blown glass bauble 15cm across. The teal is matt and mottled, worn thin in places so a darker green comes through, and speckled all over with small dark flecks. The seam left by the mould runs down one side and has not been polished out. The cap is a disc of embossed iron with a hanging ring set into it.

At 15cm across this is a bauble that hangs on its own rather than among others, so it wants a strong branch low on a tree, a bannister, or a hook where it can turn. It weighs 0.41kg, which is a real weight on a branch. The matt finish holds the colour rather than throwing light back, so what reads from across a room is the mottling and the worn patches rather than a highlight.

The glass is recycled. The waste glass is collected and washed to remove impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is hand-blown, and the blowing is what leaves the irregular mottled patterning, so no two baubles carry it the same way. The cap is iron. The Oko giant bauble is made in two sizes and in matt green, gold, bordeaux and this teal.

How do I look after it?

Wipe the dust off with a dry, soft cloth. Handle it carefully, keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from the finish, and keep it indoors.
