Description

The Nyuki is a recycled glass vase, 27cm tall and 12cm across at its widest, which is low on the body. From there the wall draws in and runs almost straight to the top, finishing in a smooth rolled rim with a 9cm opening. The glass is clear and carries trapped bubbles and flecks right through the wall, dense enough to read as a grey mottle against a plain background and much paler in front of a light wall.

A 9cm opening takes a handful of stems rather than one, and at 27cm the vase is tall enough to hold branches cut long. It weighs 1.7kg empty, which is heavy for a vase of that height. It holds water, and cut stems stand well above the rim; the Nyuki is also made in a larger size.

The glass is recycled. The bubbles are put into it on purpose while it is being made, and they are what give each vase its own mottle, so the spread and the size of them differ from one to the next. Glassmakers shape each vase and finish the rim with the rolled edge. The Nyuki range runs to two sizes: this one at 27cm, and a 43cm vase with a 13cm opening.

Frequently Asked

How tall is it?

27cm, 12cm across at the widest and 9cm across the opening.

Does it hold water?

Yes. It takes water with cut stems standing in it.

Why is the glass speckled?

The bubbles are put into the glass on purpose during the making. Every vase takes its own spread of them, so no two are the same.

Is the glass recycled?

Yes.

Is there a larger one?

Yes, one. The large Nyuki stands 43cm with a 13cm opening.

How should it be looked after?

Wipe it with a soft damp cloth. Hand wash only, with a mild dish soap, and do not leave it to soak. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from it.
