Description

A hexagonal lantern 25cm high, 19cm across and 17.5cm deep, built as six clear glass panels held in a frame of aged brass. The roof is a low dome of solid metal punched right through with a repeating leaf pattern, and it sits above the glass on a collar of the same punched work. One of the six panels is hinged and swings out on a small wire catch, and the base is a shallow glass tray held in a brass rim.

The candle goes in through the hinged panel and stands on the glass base. Because the roof is punched rather than solid, light goes up through it as well as out through the glass, so a lit lantern throws the pattern of the perforations onto whatever is above it. At 25cm this stands on a hearth, a hall table or a shelf.

The frame is metal, shaped by hand, and the pattern in the roof is punched with traditional tools rather than cut or cast, so no two roofs read exactly alike. The glass panels are recycled: waste glass is collected and prepared, then crushed and melted before the panels are made. A taller size is made in the same design. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

25cm high, 19cm across and 17.5cm deep. A taller size is made in the same design.

How does the candle go in?

One of the six glass panels is hinged and swings open on a small wire catch. The candle stands on the glass base inside.

Can it be used outdoors?

No. Indoor use only.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Stand the candle securely and make sure the flame is not directed at the glass. Keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent a build up of dust or dirt, using a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. Warm water and a mild dish soap will take off excess wax; dry it immediately afterwards and do not leave it to soak.
