Description

The Nyati is a round serving bowl made from mango wood, 25.5cm across and 9.5cm deep, with shallow sides that open out to the rim. The whole of the inside and the outside is worked over with a chisel, in short curved cuts laid one across another so the surface is faceted rather than smooth, and in places the cuts break the line of the rim into a soft scallop. The wood is a dark brown that goes close to grey where the light catches the face of a cut.

At 25.5cm across and only 9.5cm deep this is a wide shallow bowl rather than a deep one, which suits a salad brought to the table, bread rolls, or fruit left out on a worktop. It holds its shape when it is empty, so it also stands as a bowl for keys and small things by a door. It stands on a table beside the deeper Nyati bowl and the long Nyati platter, all cut from the same wood.

The wood is mango, a by-product of the fruit growing industry in India, taken for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing. Each bowl is chiselled by hand, so the direction of the cuts and the run of the grain differ from one to the next. The wood is left as it is, with no finish applied to it. The Nyati is also made as a larger bowl, and the range holds a serving platter and an etched round tray in the same dark wood.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

25.5cm across and 9.5cm deep. The same bowl is made in a larger size.

Is it food safe?

Yes.

Is it sealed or treated?

No. The wooden bowls, platters and boards are not treated with any finish, so the wood is left as it is.

How do I look after it?

Do not leave it to soak. Wash it in warm soapy water and dry it immediately with a cloth, which stops the wood taking on too much moisture and prevents it warping or cracking.

Will every one look the same?

The shape will. The chiselling and the grain are different on every bowl.
