Nyati Large Mango Wood Serving Bowl - Dark Brown

The large Nyati is a serving bowl carved from mango wood, 33cm across and 17.15cm deep, in a dark brown close to black. The outside is worked all over in overlapping chisel cuts, each one a shallow facet a couple of centimetres long, so the wall reads as a faceted surface rather than a smooth curve. Inside it is left smooth, and the grain runs across the floor of the bowl in bands that lift lighter where the cut has gone deeper into the wood.

At 33cm across this is a bowl for a table rather than a worktop: a dressed salad, fruit, or bread brought out whole. The wall is thick and the empty bowl weighs 2.07kg. Seen from directly above, the grain of the interior is the whole of what shows and the chiselling disappears. The Nyati also runs as a smaller serving bowl, a serving platter and an etched round tray.

The wood is mango, carved by hand, and the dark brown runs deep enough that the chisel cuts on the outside carry it too. Mango is a by-product of fruit growing in India, cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, which is what makes it available. Because every bowl is worked by hand the facets fall differently and the grain runs differently, so no two are alike. The bowl is food safe.
