Description

This is a chopping board made of marble, 40cm long, 20cm wide and 1.5cm thick, with a short handle at one end. The stone is beige, scattered across its face with flecks and larger patches that carry on round the edges, so the board looks like a slice of the rock itself. Marble is a natural stone, so the markings vary from one piece to the next and the board you receive will have its own pattern. At 2.5KG it is solid and weighty, and it sits still on the worktop while you work.

At this size it handles the everyday jobs: slicing a loaf, cutting a wedge of cheese, chopping herbs or a few vegetables, then going straight to the table to serve. Marble stays cool to the touch, which is why it has long been a favourite surface for cheese and butter. It makes a good serving board for a relaxed supper, a cheese course after dinner or bread and olives with drinks when friends come round. Between meals, the cord on its handle lets it hang from a hook beside the hob, or it can lean against the wall at the back of a kitchen worktop, where the stone pattern does the decorating for you.

The board is 100% marble, with a thin cord threaded through a hole in the handle for hanging. It does not go in the dishwasher, and it is not for the microwave or the oven, so wash it by hand. Marble, like most natural stone, can mark from acidic foods such as lemon juice, vinegar or wine, so wipe those away soon after use. To style it, stand it upright against a pale wall behind a utensil jar and a few storage jars, or lay it flat on a wooden table, where the beige stone sits well against warm wood.
