Description
This is a wooden Christmas decoration with its own light: a small winter town laid out along a base 45cm from end to end. Gabled houses with snow-capped roofs stand either side of a clock tower, with fir trees, a street lamp, a bench, a little sleigh and a picket fence along the front. Tiny figures in hats stand about the street, and the base is cut with arched windows that open on to small scenes: a counter of bread and gingerbread, a figure carrying a present through a doorway and another beside a decorated tree. It is made entirely of plywood in a natural beige, with cut-out windows and stars that let the light through.
When it is lit, the windows, arches and doorways glow warm, so it earns its place once the afternoons draw in. At 45cm long it sits comfortably along a windowsill, a mantelpiece or the top of a sideboard, and it suits a hallway console where everyone passes it on the way in from the cold. It will please anyone who prefers a traditional wooden Christmas to tinsel and glitter, and it makes a thoughtful present for a host or a grandparent who brings the same decorations out year after year.
Plywood is built from thin sheets of wood bonded in layers, which keeps fine cut shapes like these window frames and fir trees firm and stable. The wood carries a lacquer finish, which seals the surface and gives it a smooth feel. At 0.8KG it is easy to lift down and pack away when the season ends. The maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download. For styling, give it a sill or shelf of its own where the lit windows show against the dark outside, and set a few pine cones or sprigs of greenery at either end.
