Description

Nonnie is a chopping board cut from mango wood, with softly rounded corners and one end that narrows into a round loop handle. It is 45cm long, 24cm wide and 2cm thick, which gives a generous working surface for a whole loaf, a pile of vegetables or a spread of cheeses, and the depth keeps it steady on the worktop. Mango is a hardwood with a lively, swirling grain, and this brown board shows it well: darker knots, paler streaks and bands of warmer tone run along its length, so no two boards look quite alike.

It belongs in the kitchen for slicing bread, chopping herbs and preparing fruit and vegetables, and it moves as easily to the table. Carry it through with a round of cheese, a few figs and a torn loaf for guests to help themselves, and it becomes a serving board for a Sunday lunch, a drinks evening or a festive spread. At 0.7KG it is light enough to lift by the handle with one hand, and the loop lets you hang it from a hook or a rail when it is not in use. It suits anyone who wants one board that works as hard on the worktop as it looks good on the table.

The board has a lacquered finish over the mango. It does not go in the dishwasher, so wash it by hand and dry it straight away; wood of any kind is happier without a long soak. It is not for the microwave or the oven, so it stays a board for the worktop and the table rather than something to warm food on. Stand it on its edge against the splashback with the handle at the top, or lay it lengthways down the centre of a table with small plates around it. The styling props shown are not included.
