Description

A glazed display cabinet, 190cm tall, 116cm wide and 45cm deep. The carcass is mango wood with a moulded top, and two full-height doors are framed in dark iron and divided by glazing bars into four panes each, so the contents show through. Two slim iron handles meet at the centre. The cabinet stands on a separate iron base with square-section legs and a low stretcher between them.

At 190cm tall and 45cm deep the cabinet takes a wall in a hallway or a living room, and it works in a kitchen as a stand-alone crockery cupboard. The interior is shelved and shows through the glass, so whatever goes in it is on view. It stands against a wall beside a fireplace and takes ceramics and books behind the doors.

The structure is iron, finished in antique black, and the cabinetry is mango wood, hand-carved and set into a hand-welded iron frame. Mango is a by-product of the fruit industry in India: once the trees stop bearing, they are taken down and the timber is used. The cabinet weighs 90kg and is made in this one size.
