Description

The Nila Gul is a rectangular cushion cover, 60cm by 40cm, woven on a handloom from cotton and jute. The pattern is woven into the face rather than stitched onto it: a row of large diamonds in rust, each built from stepped blocks so the edges read as a run of small squares instead of a drawn line, with crosses and half diamonds filling the ground between them. The ground is a natural oatmeal, and small raised knots of yarn are scattered across the weave.

At 60cm by 40cm this lies across the seat of a sofa or along the back of a chair rather than standing square. The rust is a soft faded orange rather than a strong one and the pattern covers most of the face, so the cover carries colour across a whole seat without a hard edge anywhere on it.

The base is a blend of cotton and jute, woven on a traditional Indian handloom by methods handed down through generations, and the two fibres between them give the fabric its weight and its coarse, open surface. Because the pattern is woven rather than printed, the blocks shift by a thread or two from cover to cover and no two run identically. The Nila Gul is made in this 60 by 40cm and in a 50 by 50cm square.

Frequently Asked

What size is it?

60cm by 40cm. The same cover is made as a 50cm square.

Is the pattern woven or printed?

Woven into the face as part of the fabric, not printed on it and not stitched over it.

What is it made from?

A blend of cotton and jute, woven on a traditional Indian handloom.

Will the colours run?

No. Every cushion cover and throw is tested for colourfastness.

How do I look after it?

Follow the label on the cover, because some fabrics are spot clean only even though many covers are washable. For a spill, lift the liquid with an absorbent tissue, blot with a sponge or a folded towel moistened in lukewarm water, then dry the area with warm air from a hair dryer so it does not water mark. Anything larger is a job for a professional.
