Description

The Nila Gul square is a 50cm cushion cover woven on a handloom from cotton and jute. A single eight pointed medallion sits in the middle of the face, worked in rust and built from stepped blocks so its arms read as a run of small squares rather than as drawn lines, with a triangle answering it in each corner. The ground is a natural oatmeal carrying faint horizontal striping, and raised knots of yarn stand out of the weave across the whole face.

A 50cm square is the size that sits upright against the back of a sofa or a chair, which holds the medallion square on and centred rather than running sideways. The rust is soft rather than strong and the pattern sits in the middle with plain ground round it, so a pair of these reads quieter than a cover patterned edge to edge.

Cotton and jute are woven together on a traditional Indian handloom by methods handed down through generations. The weave is open and coarse, and the rust runs at an uneven depth along a single arm of the medallion where the yarn is thicker or thinner. The Nila Gul is made in this 50cm square and in a 60 by 40cm rectangle.
