Description
Our Nicola vase is a cream stoneware piece shaped like a double gourd: a full, rounded lower body, a narrow waist, a smaller rounded upper body and a short neck with a modest opening. It stands 34cm tall and 17.5cm across, a size that suits a shelf, sideboard or windowsill rather than the floor. Over the cream base runs a printed pattern of looping lines, some bold and some fine, that wander around the curves like contour lines on a map, so each side you turn to the room looks a little different.
A windowsill is a natural home for it, where daylight picks out the curves, and it sits just as happily on a mantelpiece, a console table in the hallway or a bedside table in the bedroom. The narrow opening suits a few stems rather than a full bunch: a sprig or two of dried lavender, a single branch of eucalyptus or a handful of seed heads, so the pattern stays the main event. Left empty, it works as a sculptural piece in its own right, and the graphic linework pairs well with plain linen, pale walls and natural wood. It also makes a thoughtful present for someone setting up a first home or anyone who likes ceramics with a bit of character.
The vase is 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired clay that gives a piece real substance; this one weighs 1.948KG, so it feels reassuringly solid when you lift it. The pattern is printed, and the surface has a silky smooth glaze that is pleasant to the touch. Because the shape is so curvy, it looks best with a little space around it: give it a spot of its own on a sill or shelf, or group it with one or two plainer, lower pieces in neutral tones so the pattern has room to breathe.
