Description

A tealight holder hand blown from recycled glass, 13cm tall and 13cm across, with thick walls and a frosted, unpolished surface. The form is a rounded cylinder that swells a little towards the base and turns in again at the foot, and the rim is left uneven, rising and falling round the circumference. The colour runs down the wall from a pale smoke grey at the rim through to a warm amber and rust at the base, mottled rather than banded, with patches where the glass has gone almost opaque.

The wall is thick and frosted, so a lit tealight reads as a broad warm glow through the glass rather than a sharp flame. Stood together with the other two sizes, each holding a tealight, the amber at the base of each one takes most of the light while the smoke grey above stays dim. At 13cm this is the middle of the three.

The glass is recycled. Waste glass is collected, crushed and melted down, then hand blown into a simple mould, which is where the shape comes from. The colour and the mottling settle differently in every piece. The Ngolo range runs to three sizes of this holder in aged smoke and three more in amber, and on to baubles, a vase and a wine cooler.
