Description

A coffee table, 41cm tall, in wood. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 91cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. Aim for roughly two thirds the length of the sofa, and the same height as the seat cushion or slightly below.

Burr figure is the swirled, knotted grain that forms where a tree has grown around a wound. Reproduced as an effect it gives that density of pattern without the cost of a genuine burr veneer, which is among the most expensive timber surfaces there is. The body is MDF beneath the finish, which is what holds a panel this size flat. Solid timber of the same width would move with the humidity of the room and eventually show it at a joint. No of storage inside.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with.

Decide about storage before looks: a shelf or a drawer is what stops the top becoming the place everything lands. Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
