Description

This is a tall stoneware jug that holds 1300ml, standing 25.5cm tall and 12cm across. The white body tapers up from a broad base to a pinched waist, then flares open into a wide mouth, so it has the look of a carafe without a handle. Streaks of glaze run down from the rim and stop at different lengths, and fine horizontal ridges show through the white when the light catches them. It weighs 1.05KG, so it has a solid feel in the hand before it is even filled.

With 1300ml to fill, this is a jug for the whole table rather than a single glass: water with a family supper, juice at a weekend breakfast, or milk set out beside the coffee. The wide mouth is easy to fill at the tap and roomy enough for ice or slices of lemon. There is no handle, so you lift it around the narrow waist, which gives your hand a natural hold for pouring. Between meals it stands on a kitchen shelf or a dresser, and a few long stems from the garden sit happily in it too.

It is 100% stoneware, a dense clay fired hard, and it goes in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven. That means it washes up with everything else after dinner, and you can warm milk in it without moving it to a pan first. A narrow band of bare clay shows at the foot, beneath the glaze. For the table, set the white body against plain linen and clear glasses, or stand it beside a wooden board so the streaks of glaze pick up the warmth of the wood.
