Description

The Neram is a shallow rectangular tray 28cm by 12cm and only 1.5cm deep, raised from iron and finished in antique brass. The whole surface is hammered by hand, so the base and the low walls carry a dense field of small irregular dents that catch the light at different angles. The walls cant slightly outward, the corners are rounded, and the brass tone runs darker along the rim than across the middle.

At 28 by 12cm this is a long narrow tray rather than a square one, which suits a line of things rather than a group: a pair of candlesticks, the keys by a door, a bottle and a glass on a bedside table. At 1.5cm the walls are just high enough to stop something rolling off without hiding what is on it. It sits flat on a coffee table, a console or a dining table, and it is not made to hang on a wall.

The tray is iron under an antique brass finish. Each one is shaped by hand and the texture is hammered into the metal rather than pressed into it, so the pattern of the dents, their depth and the marks left by the tools differ from tray to tray. The finish sits deeper in the hollows than on the high points, which is what makes the hammering read from across a room.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

28cm by 12cm, and 1.5cm deep.

What is it made of?

Iron, under an antique brass finish.

Can it hang on a wall?

No. It is made to sit flat.

Will every tray look the same?

No. The hammering is done by hand, so the pattern of the dents, their depth and the marks left by the tools differ from one tray to the next.

How do I look after it?

Hand wash only, using a mild dish soap, and rinse it in clean water. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the finish.
