Description
This is a vase with a face. Its black stoneware body is moulded on the front with closed eyes, a long straight nose and full lips, giving it a calm, inward look. A band of speckled, lustrous glaze runs across the eyes and round the sides, its edges breaking into drips against the plain black of the rest. It stands 22cm tall, 15cm long and 10.5cm wide, a flat-fronted, box-like form with a rectangular opening at the top, so it reads as a small sculpture as much as a vase.
We like it best on a mantelpiece, a bookshelf or a sideboard, where the face can be seen clearly. A few dried stems, seed heads or grasses give it height without hiding the features, and its slim 10.5cm width lets it sit on a narrow shelf or at the end of a crowded mantelpiece. It sits happily in a living room or a study among books and other ceramics, and on a hallway console it greets whoever comes through the door. It also makes a thoughtful present for someone who enjoys faces and figures in their home, or anyone building a shelf of characterful ceramics.
It is made entirely of stoneware, a dense ceramic fired at high temperature, and at 1.2KG it has a reassuring heft in the hand. The black body has a soft sheen, the lips are glossier, and the glaze band has a speckled, almost mineral texture that catches the light. The features are moulded into the form itself, raised in relief rather than painted. For styling, keep the stems sparse and taller than the vase, and set it beside something pale or rough-textured, such as a stone tray or a plain white pot, so both the black body and the glaze band are seen at their best.
